Featured Supercharged Build of August 2023

This month’s Featured Build takes us to Calgary in Alberta, Canada! This wonderful 1995 BMW E36 Supercharged 318Ti was built by Mathew Schmor. Mat first reached out to us earlier this year, asking us of his intent to supercharge the stock 4 Cylinder BMW M42/M44 engine using the M45 supercharger found in the Mini Cooper.

We quickly settled on a V4 M.O.A.B. 500 Kit, which is based on the AMR 500 supercharger, as the WMD 45 kit that supports the M45 supercharger was not yet ready. The M.O.A.B. 500 kit produces just under 5 PSI of boost which translates an additional 40-50HP + to the stock engine. For a 4 Cylinder BMW engine such as the M44B19 or the M42b18, which hovers around the sub 150HP mark, this pushes it to the level of the 6 Cylinder variants nearing 200HP’s with a more aggressive power band.

“Well we had a successful Saturday morning including some challenges. AMR 500 is fully operational with 4 pounds of boost recorded. We did some short test pulls mainly rolling from 2000 rpm to 5800-6000 rpm second gear shifting into 3rd.

As mentioned before we live pretty high. This set up at Sea Level would probably be reaching closer to 5 pounds of boost.
Consistency hitting 4 lbs of boost. Closer to sea level this unit would really be something.

In reality I am hitting about 2.5 lbs of boost above stock and it is still making the car way more fun to drive and the noises make me grin.”  – Mat

The car has been to the European Car show in Calgary, and the build was well documented on the 318Ti Forums.

For those interested in seeing a few videos, we have put up a small compilation with clips from Mat.

B.R.O.S.K. 1 – BMW Rotrex Supercharger Kit!

Our First Rotrex Centrifugal Supercharger based kit is now on it’s way! We introduce you to the B.R.O.S.K. – 1. Built specifically for the racers and car enthusiasts who like to take it to the Race Track!

Short for BMW Rotrex Supercharger Kit, B.R.O.S.K – 1 was developed in house by Mas Schandorph of Mas Motorsport Wiring (M.M.W.) in in Roskilde, Denmark. The B.R.O.S.K. – 1 supports the Rotrex C30 as well as the Rotrex C38 family of superchargers.

The projects development began in 2022 and was completed this year. To demonstrate its track ability, a total of 2 BMW E46 cars (Blue 325i and Yellow 330i) were built for this kit and then taken to the track!

After being track tested over a hundred times, this kit is now approved for production this fall.  The B.R.O.S.K. – 1 is our highest power output centrifugal supercharger option so far M5x and S5x engines. With the smallest foot print yet, the robust design of the bracket system mounts in place of the AC unit, and brings forth the high efficiency and reliability found in the Rotrex brand of Superchargers.

Having a Supercharger on a BMW already is something special, but what’s more special here is unlike most centrifugal superchargers, the Rotrex line of Superchargers offer a low down linear power curve and raw torque figures, which comes close to the traditional Hyde Motor Works Roots and Twinscrew supercharger setups.

Below we showcase what very low boost figures can achieve with just the Rotrex C30 supercharger. Keep in mind, the power is measured at the wheels, which means the final engine HP figure is about 20% higher.

B.R.O.S.K. – 1. has an expected release in Early Winter of 2023 with discounted Pre Orders available from August directly through Hyde Motor Works.

Watch the video below from Mas, as he introduced you to the B.R.O.S.K. – 1 Supercharger Kit!

Harbinger – P2 Centrifugal Supercharger Kit for BMW

We are proud to release our most compact and affordable Supercharger Kit yet. Introducing the Harbinger Supercharger Kit for BMW’s!

The Harbinger (Pronounced: Har – bing – er) was built with a few key principles, which are being able to offer a supercharger setup that can deliver high performance with an affordable price tag while still keeping the reliability of our traditional supercharger kits. Targeting enthusiasts that are looking for a compact option for their BMW M5x and S5x engines.

Although actual development has started in 2021, pre-development concepts of it can be found at K.C. Design Concepts, New Jersey, United States as early as 2020. The kit itself is built around using a P2 Centrifugal Supercharger unit. This is a very affordable supercharger unit produced by Speedmaster79 in Australia with manufacturer part number PCE157.1002. The P2 Centrifugal Supercharger is a dry self contained unit that does not require any external oil coolers and can be bought with a warranty directly from the manufacturer. This rather large supercharger is a direct drive unit that’s rated to be able to support up to 1150CFM and some 55,000 RPM by Speedmaster.

One of the challenges we came with when building the Harbinger was the supercharger drive system. The unit is a direct drive and sold without a gearbox to drive it, this means we had to simplify the drive system to ensure the final kit can maintain one of the key principles, which is affordability for the enthusiasts. We resolved this by designing a custom toothed COG Pulley and belt, produced exclusively by us to make this system work. The custom toothed Pulley itself had multiple concepts and sizes.

Currently, we provide the kit with only one pulley option that limits the maximum RPM and work load of the supercharger just under 80%. This is to increase the reliability and longevity for the end user. Larger drive pulleys would be an option in the future.

Being a centrifugal supercharger, the Harbinger of course behaves much different than our traditional Roots and Twinscrew Supercharger kits. With the Harbinger the power delivery is more similar to a turbocharger, where the boost starts to build from the higher mid RPM range and continues to build up as you reach a higher RPM. Being a centrifugal it is also quite efficient and provides a cooler charge temperature. This means for those wanting a low boost setup, they can use this without an intercooler.

Developed with both stock and built engines in mind, this setup will work for both factory stock and built engines with aftermarket head gaskets, rods, pistons and head bolts. While a built engine will be able to handle more power, on a stock engine, we suggest limiting the boost to 10 PSI, using a boost controller and a bypass valve.

The Harbinger will also be the first time we offer a supercharger kit in a colour other than black! That’s right, these CNC machined Harbinger kits will come in 2 different colour options, Azur Blue and Dark Yellow inspired by BMW.

With all the pre-production prototypes sold out and a future BMW N52 Engine concept in the works, currently the final Harbinger kits are in production and available for ordering with a late May 2023 delivery schedule.

You can Pre-Order the Harbinger today from our Shop.

Watch the video below from Keith to find out more about the kit and how simple it is to install on on your car!
